Entrevista/Interview: NAXATRAS. Su bajista John Vagenas nos desvela todos detalles de su nuevo álbum ‘IV’

‘IV’, el nuevo álbum de NAXATRAS, verá la luz el próximo viernes 25 de febrero. Este nuevo trabajo de los griegos cuenta con varias novedades tanto en su sonido como en la propia formación de la banda. Hablamos con su bajísta John Vagenas (NiMoya), que nos desvela todos los detalles sobre el álbum así como de la propia banda.

‘IV’, NAXATRAS’s new album, will be released next Friday, February 25th. This new work by the Greeks has several novelties both in its sound and in the formation of the band itself. We speak with their bassist John Vagenas (NiMoya), who reveals all the details about the album as well as the band itself.

‘Sentimos que era la hora de probar algo diferente’

DenpaFuzz.- Hola, chicos, tras haber coincido con vosotros en múltiples conciertos, es la primera vez que os entrevisto, lo cual es todo un placer, y más teniendo en cuenta que vuestro nuevo álbum ‘IV’ da la sensación de que comienza una nueva etapa en la banda. La primera pregunta que debo hacerlos es obligada. Tras una década intensa, la conversión de trio en cuarteto y la incorporación de Pantelis a los teclados ¿Supone realmente el comienzo de una nueva etapa para la banda?

Naxatras (John): ¡Hola, es un placer tener esta entrevista contigo! Bueno, sí, sentimos que era hora de probar algo diferente. Completamos un círculo con la trilogía de nuestros álbumes anteriores y las nuevas canciones tenían mucho espacio para diferentes sonidos y experimentación, por lo que Pantelis fue una combinación perfecta.

DenpaFuzz.- Después de haber escuchado varias veces vuestro nuevo álbum, percibo nuevas vibraciones, un enfoque distinto a la hora de componer las canciones. ¿Qué influencia tiene la incorporación de Pantelis? ¿Qué aportan los teclados al sonido de Naxatras?

Naxatras (John): Comenzó antes de que Pantelis se uniera a la banda, ya habíamos compuesto algo de música y la idea de que “podríamos tener un sintetizador aquí o un Rhodes allá” aparecía con frecuencia, así que lo invitamos a tocar algunas canciones y después de un tiempo terminó tocando en todo el álbum. Ciertamente aporta otra dimensión al sonido. Lo hace más espacial a veces, más emocional en otras, toca muchos instrumentos diferentes que son vitales para la narración y la atmósfera de cada canción.

DenpaFuzz.- En ‘IV’ se percibe una sensación de madurez en vuestras composiciones, las canciones parecen más pulidas, más elegantes, más refinadas. ¿Cómo ha sido el proceso de composición de estas?

Naxatras (John): Las composiciones también siguen una lógica diferente, son más ajustadas y con mayor variedad que en los discos anteriores. Tocamos mucho y luego trabajamos aún más para perfeccionar estas canciones, queríamos destilar su esencia en su mejor forma, para que fluyeran entre sí sin problemas.

DenpaFuzz.-  ¿Cómo habéis vivido estos meses de pandemia sin poder tocar en directo? ¿En que habéis gastado ese tiempo libre extra que os ha dado la ausencia de shows?

Naxatras (John): Fue bastante duro psicológicamente, dos años completos de casi nada, solo cinco conciertos o algo así y ninguno de ellos en el extranjero. Pasamos diferentes etapas, a veces más creativas y a veces menos. Sin embargo, encontramos tiempo para trabajar en nuestros proyectos en solitario. Yo completé muchas canciones de Ni Moya y John Delias también lanzó algunas canciones nuevas.

‘Este es nuestro álbum más progresivo con toda seguridad’

DenpaFuzz.- En los últimos años estamos viendo bandas de la escena pesada que se decantan por un sonido más progresivo. Cualquiera que escuche ‘IV’ puede apreciarlo, ¿Qué buscáis con este sonido? A la vez, tengo la sensación de que es vuestro álbum con mas voces en las canciones, ¿Cuál es la causa de esto?

Naxatras (John): Este es nuestro álbum más progresivo con toda seguridad. Naturalmente, sentimos esta necesidad de entrar de lleno en los años 70. Para ser honesto, no nos sentíamos como una banda de stoner rock en estos últimos años, “III” tenía nuestros últimos riffs de stoner e incluso allí, eran pocos. Todo forma parte de nuestra evolución, y las voces eran algo con lo que nos sentíamos más cómodos ahora, de hecho tomamos lecciones de canto y estábamos emocionados de cantar más, y probar cosas que rara vez usábamos en el pasado, como coros o polifonías. Aún así, no hay tantas voces en comparación con la mayoría de las bandas.

DenpaFuzz: Vosotros mismos sois los encargados de editar el álbum, ¿A que se debe esto? ¿No ha habido ningún sello discográfico interesado, o habéis preferido hacerlo todo vosotros?

Naxatras (John): Coqueteamos con la idea de un sello para este álbum, pero no nos conformamos con ninguna oferta, así que decidimos hacerlo nosotros mismos de nuevo, ¡aunque esta vez más organizados! Hay tantas cosas que no sabíamos durante todos estos años y que aún no sabemos, es un campo enorme. Sin embargo, es una sensación agradable, porque haces las cosas exactamente cómo quieres y prestas atención a cada detalle, para hacer realidad tu visión.

DenpaFuzz.- Muchas veces los fans no entienden un giro en el sonido de su banda favorita, los Naxatras de ahora, parecen una banda más sofisticada, más melódica, y con una cierta sensación de puede sonar algo menos pesada, ¿Cómo creéis que recibirán vuestros fans este nuevo álbum con unas canciones más pulidas?

Naxatras (John): Supongo que habrá algunos fans que querrán recuperar el viejo sonido, ya que era una especie de marca registrada. Eso es de esperar, cuando cambias de dirección. Pero sentimos esto más, como una evolución, más como encontrar realmente de lo que somos capaces. Los elementos centrales de la banda están todos allí, los riffs pesados, los ritmos, los momentos alucinantes. Es por eso que creemos que a la mayoría de los fans realmente les gustará y que, con suerte, mas personas se unan a seguirnos.

DenpaFuzz.- ‘IV’ mantiene la secuencia numérica del nombre de todos vuestros Lp’s, ¿A qué se debe que no tengan un nombre específico? ¿Tenéis previsto cambiar esto en el futuro?

Naxatras (John): Bueno, la verdad es que nunca podemos ponernos de acuerdo en los nombres de los álbumes. Podemos encontrar los títulos de las canciones, no hay problema, ¡pero los títulos de los álbumes son difíciles! Entonces, decidimos llamarlo «IV», que también se ve bien. En el futuro, probablemente tendremos un título de álbum adecuado en algún momento…

DenpaFuzz.- En el sonido de la canciones predominan las vibraciones psico-progresivas, pero también se percibe una influencia del sonido de los 70’s. ¿En que bandas se inspira Naxatras’ para escribir sus canciones?. Como continuación a la pregunta, ¿Qué bandas contemporáneas escucháis en la actualidad?

Naxatras (John): Las principales influencias aquí son, de hecho, las bandas progresivas de los 70, como Camel, Wishbone Ash, Eloy, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Rainbow, quizás algo de Led Zeppelin. No hay muchas bandas contemporáneas, tal vez con la excepción de King Gizzard, pero hay algunas vibraciones de Tool y Ozric Tentacles aquí y allá.

DenpaFuzz.- Desde vuestro nacimiento como banda, habéis ido logrando un mayor reconocimiento cada año que pasa, ¿Dónde está vuestro techo? ¿Cuáles son vuestras metas?

Naxatras (John): Los mejores años hasta ahora fueron 2018-19, fue el ciclo de «III» y recorrimos tantos países del mundo, incluso tocamos en Australia. Y también muchos festivales geniales, incluidos Desertfest, Dunajam y Ozora. ¡Esperamos ir más allá con este álbum, tocar el alma de más personas y viajar a más lugares, compartir nuestra música, hacer nuevos amigos y seguir siendo creativos!

¡Estamos súper emocionados porque nos divertimos mucho en las giras y ciertamente tocaremos algunos shows en el verano también!

DenpaFuzz.- Tengo la sensación de que sois una de las bandas que mas conciertos ha dado en los últimos años, ahora tenéis programada un gira para el mes de abril en la que daréis 20 conciertos. ¿Cómo vivís el pasar en la carretera tanto tiempo? Y en el verano, ¿Tenéis planes de nuevos shows como soporte para la presentación de vuestro nuevo álbum?

Naxatras (John): Después de todo este tiempo sin actividad y ociosos, 20 conciertos no parecen tantos. ¡La primera gira de “III” duró 50 días! ¡Estamos súper emocionados porque nos divertimos mucho en las giras y ciertamente tocaremos algunos shows en el verano también!

DenpaFuzz.- Ha sido un placer hablar con vosotros, espero veros en vuestra visita a Madrid esta primavera, si queréis decir algo a vuestros fans españoles….. Gracias por vuestras palabras y mucha suerte con el nuevo álbum.

Naxatras (John): ¡Gracias hombre! No puedo esperar a verlos de nuevo chicos, ¡lo vamos a pasar genial!

‘We felt it was time to try something different’

DenpaFuzz.- Hi, guys, after having met you at multiple concerts, it’s the first time I’ve interviewed you, which is a real pleasure, and even more so considering that your new album ‘IV’ gives the feeling that a new stage in the band. The first question I must ask you is mandatory. After an intense decade, the conversion from a trio to a quartet and the incorporation of Pantelis on keyboards, does this really mean the beginning of a new age for the band?

Naxatras (John): Hey, it’s a pleasure to have this interview with you! Well, yeah, we felt it was time to try something different. We completed a circle with the trilogy of our previous albums and the new songs had plenty of space for different sounds and experimentation, so Pantelis was a perfect match.

DenpaFuzz.- After having listened several times to your new album, I perceive new vibrations, a different approach when composing the songs. What influence does the incorporation of Pantelis have? What do the keyboards contribute to the sound of Naxatras?

Naxatras (John): It began before Pantelis joined the band, we had already written some music and the idea that “we could have a synth here or a Rhodes there” was coming up frequently, so we invited him to jam on some songs and after a while he ended up playing in the whole album. They certainly bring another dimension to the sound. They make it more spacey at times, more emotional at others, he plays many different instruments that are vital to the storytelling and atmosphere of each track.

DenpaFuzz.- In ‘IV’ a sense of maturity is perceived in your compositions, the songs seem more polished, more elegant, more refined. How was the composition process of these?

Naxatras (John): The compositions follow a different logic too, they tighter and with greater variety than on the previous records. We jammed a lot and then worked even more on perfecting these songs, we wanted to distill their essence into their best form, so that they would flow into one another seamlessly.

DenpaFuzz.- .-How have you lived these months of pandemic without being able to play live? How have you spent that extra free time that the absence of shows has given you?

Naxatras (John): It was quite tough psychologically, two full years of almost nothing, just five gigs or something and none of them abroad. We passed different stages, sometimes more creative and sometimes less. We found time to work on our solo projects though, I completed many Ni Moya songs and John Delias released some new tunes as well.

‘This is our most progressive album for sure’

DenpaFuzz.- In the last years we have been seeing bands from the heavy scene that opt for a more progressive sound. Anyone who listens to ‘IV’ can appreciate it, what are you looking for with this sound? At the same time, I have the feeling that it is your album with more voices in the songs, what is the cause of this?

Naxatras (John): This is our most progressive album for sure. We naturally felt this need to go fully into the 70’s. To be honest, we weren’t feeling like a stoner rock band for these last years, “III” had our last remaining stoner riffs and even there they were few. It’s all part of our evolution and the voices were something we felt more comfortable with now, we actually took vocal lessons and we were excited to sing more and to try things we rarely used in the past, like backing vocals or polyphonies. Still, there aren’t so many vocals compared to the majority of bands.

DenpaFuzz.-: You yourselves are in charge of editing the album, why is this? Has there been no record label interested, or have you preferred to do everything yourselves?

Naxatras (John): We flirted with the idea of a label for this one, but we weren’t satisfied with any offer, so we decided to do it ourselves again, although more organised this time! There are so many things we didn’t know through all these years and still don’t know, it’s a huge field. It’s a nice feeling though, because you do things exactly the way you want to and you pay attention to every detail to make your vision into a reality.

DenpaFuzz.- Many times fans don’t understand a twist in the sound of their favorite band, the Naxatras of now, they seem like a more sophisticated band, more melodic, and with a certain sense of it may sound somewhat less heavy, how do you think they will receive? your fans this new album with more polished songs?

Naxatras (John): I guess there will be a few fans who will want the old sound back, since it was a kind of trademark. That’s to be expected, when you change direction. But we feel this more like an evolution, more like actually finding what we are capable of. The core elements of the band are all there, the heavy riffs, the grooves, the trippy moments. That’s why we believe that most fans will really dig it and that, hopefully, more people will come along with this one.

DenpaFuzz.- ‘IV’ maintains the numerical sequence of the name of all your Lp’s, why don’t they have a specific name? Do you plan to change this in the future?

Naxatras (John): Well, the truth is we can never agree on album names. We can find song titles, no problem, but album titles are tough man! So, we decided to name this “IV”, it looks nice too. In the future, we will probably have a proper album title at some point…

DenpaFuzz.- Psycho-progressive vibrations predominate in the sound of the songs, but there is also an influence of the sound of the 70’s. In what bands Naxatras’ is inspired to write their songs?. As a continuation to the question, What contemporary bands do you currently listen to?

Naxatras (John): The main influences here are indeed 70’s prog bands, like Camel, Wishbone Ash, Eloy, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Rainbow, some Led Zeppelin maybe. Not many contemporary bands, perhaps with the exception of King Gizzard, but there some Tool and Ozric Tentacles vibes here and there.

DenpaFuzz.- Since your birth as a band, you have been achieving greater recognition with each passing year, where is your highest point? What are your aspirations?

Naxatras (John): The best years ‘till now were 2018-19, it was the cycle of “III” and we toured so many countries around the world, we even played Australia. And so many cool festivals too, including Desertfest, Dunajam and Ozora. We hope to go beyond that with this album, to touch more people’s souls and to travel to even more places, share our music, make new friends and stay creative!

‘We’re super excited because we have so much fun touring and we’ll certainly be playing some shows in the summer too!’

DenpaFuzz.- I have the feeling that you are one of the bands that has given the most concerts in recent years, now you have a tour scheduled for the month of April in which you will give 20 concerts. How do you live spending so much time on the road? And in the summer, do you have plans for new shows as support for the presentation of your new album?

Naxatras (John): After all this time of idleness, 20 concerts don’t seem so many. The first tour for “III” lasted 50 days! We are super hyped because we have a lot of fun touring and we’ll certainly play some summer shows as well!

DenpaFuzz.- It has been a pleasure talking with you, I hope to see you on your visit to Madrid this spring, if you want to say something to your Spanish fans… Thank you for your words and good luck with the new album.

Naxatras (John): Thanks man! Can’t wait to see you again guys, we’re gonna have a blast!
