GRAVEYARD comenzaban la pasada semana su TOUR EUROPEO junto a KADAVAR. Un tour que les traerá a España, donde actuarán en el marco del Festival Kristonfest. Aprovechamos la ocasión para hablar con su bajista Truls Mörck, quien nos cuenta como afronta la banda la gira, desvelándonos detalles de su nuevo álbum, así como sus impresiones sobre esta nueva visita a España.

DenpaFuzz: Después de un tiempo sin actuaciones en directo, en unos días comienza vuestro tour por Europa junto a Kadavar en el que visitareis media Europa, ¿Cómo afrontáis una gira así? ¿Tenéis ganas de volver a la carretera?
GRAVEYARD (Truls Mörck): ¡Emocionado por volver a la carretera! Estamos sentados en el autobús ahora mismo de camino a Hamburgo para el primer concierto de la gira. Un par de shows ya están agotados y eso siempre es una buena noticia. Los últimos meses han sido bastante interesantes. Después de pasar tanto tiempo en el estudio el año pasado, trabajando en material nuevo, tuvimos que cambiar de marcha y revisar nuestras canciones más antiguas que siempre tocamos en vivo. Realmente no estamos acostumbrados a tomarnos largos descansos de tocar en vivo, así que fue un poco de trabajo volver a juntar todo. Pero no os preocupéis, un tiempo libre de giras nos ha hecho bien. ¡Sonamos mejor que nunca!
DenpaFuzz: Tanto KADAVAR como vosotros, sois dos de las bandas mas importantes de la escena europea, ¿Cómo se vive un tour así, con una banda con la que habéis compartido escenario en numerosas ocasiones?
GRAVEYARD (Truls Mörck): Nos hemos encontrado con Kadavar varias veces a lo largo de los años, pero nunca antes habíamos estado de gira juntos. Siempre ha sido agradable pasar el rato, así que estamos emocionados de conocerlos más. Esta es la segunda vez que hacemos una gira co-titular. La última vez fue con Uncle Acid en los estados 2019. Este tipo de recorridos son bastante agradables de hacer en realidad. Me quito un poco de presión y puedes entrar en lugares que normalmente no podrías llenar como cabeza de cartel.
‘Algunos de nuestros mejores momentos tocando en un festival han sido en España’
Denpafuzz: ¿Como os sentís más cómodos, en un gran festival junto a más bandas y un público numeroso, o en una sala pequeña tocando vosotros solos?
GRAVEYARD (Truls Mörck): Bueno, los festivales son una circunstancia muy interesante y única en la que estar. Como si nunca supieras lo que te va a tocar. A veces terminas tocando para grandes multitudes, lo que obviamente es muy divertido. Muchas veces hay muy poco espacio para preparar y hacer pruebas de sonido, por lo que puede ser un poco caótico subir al escenario frente a la multitud más grande que hayas visto, sin siquiera saber si vas a escuchar el bombo en tu monitor. Algunos de nuestros mejores momentos tocando en un festival han sido en España. Lo hemos pasado muy bien en Azkena y Resurrection Fest. Los dos shows que hicimos teloneando a Clutch en Madrid 2019 también fueron geniales.
DenpaFuzz: Durante este tiempo sin conciertos, ¿En que habéis gastado vuestro tiempo libre?
GRAVEYARD (Truls Mörck): Hemos estado trabajando mucho en el estudio. También tener tiempo para relajarme después de años y años de giras constantes ha sido una gran cosa. Fue como si una tormenta pasara repentinamente y dejara un gran vacío silencioso. Bastante difícil de manejar al principio y, al menos para mí, me llevó a un gran examen de conciencia y reevaluación de todo. Poder pasar más tiempo con la familia y los amigos ha sido muy agradable, por supuesto. Y también encontrar nuevos trabajos ha sido interesante. Empecé a trabajar en un teatro recientemente, simplemente ayudando en lo que podía con el sonido y en el escenario. Cosas bastante divertidas e inspiradoras. Aunque no veo la hora de volver a trabajar con la banda a tiempo completo.
‘Este es probablemente nuestro álbum más dinámico hasta ahora‘
DenpaFuzz: En 2018 publicasteis vuestro último álbum ‘Peace’. Si no tengo mal entendido, en mayo estaba prevista la publicación de vuestro nuevo álbum, pero esto se ha retrasado hasta el otoño, ¿Podéis adelantarnos algún detalle del contenido de este? ¿Cuál es la ruta que va a seguir vuestra música en este nuevo disco? ¿Qué pueden esperar vuestros fans del nuevo álbum? ¿Cuál es su nombre?
GRAVEYARD (Truls Mörck): Para nuestro sexto álbum hemos estado aprovechando la oportunidad para estirarnos un poco. Después de toda la gira que hicimos después de lanzar ‘Peace’, todos teníamos ganas de abrir más la imagen y dejar entrar un poco de aire fresco, por así decirlo. Este es probablemente nuestro álbum más dinámico hasta ahora. Y el más cinematográfico en cierto modo. Todavía tiene todas las cosas que puedes esperar de un álbum de Graveyard, pero esta vez también queríamos ir más profundo y con más movimiento. Es un álbum bastante contemplativo.
DenpaFuzz: ¿Cómo nace un nuevo álbum de Graveyard? ¿Cuál es el proceso de composición de las canciones hasta que entráis en el estudio de grabación?
GRAVEYARD (Truls Mörck): Por lo general, después de muchas giras, nos tomamos un tiempo libre para contemplar y relajarnos. Durante estos tiempos comienza a crecer material nuevo. Recuerdas la gira que acabas de hacer y usas esas experiencias como punto de partida. ¿Qué tipo de canción necesita el set? ¿Qué tipo de canción has terminado y cómo puedes infundir nueva vida a todo?
DenpaFuzz: A la hora de componer vuestras canciones, ¿Qué banda os ha influido más? ¿Cuáles son vuestras bandas favoritas?
GRAVEYARD (Truls Mörck): Bueno, en los primeros días de la banda escuchábamos mucho a bandas como Dust, Stray, Bang y Sabbath, por supuesto. Esas bandas realmente inspiraron lo que hicimos entonces. Después del primer disco no creo que las influencias sean tan claras. Muchas veces solo quieres desarrollar lo que hiciste la última vez. Así que tienes tu antiguo disco y tratas de arreglar lo que sea que no te gusta con él. Entonces, de alguna manera, te inspiras en ti mismo de alguna manera extraña al revés. ¿Qué es lo que no me gusta de nuestro último álbum y cómo podemos hacerlo diferente? Entonces terminas con algo diferente y, con suerte, mejor.
‘En España siempre hemos tenido un gran público que realmente sabe pasarlo bien’.
DenpaFuzz: A lo largo de vuestra carrera musical, habéis visitado España en múltiples ocasiones, Dentro de un mes regresáis para participar en el Festival Kristonfest, en el que tocáis por primera vez. ¿Qué opinión tenéis del público español? Según me comentan muchas bandas europeas cuando visitan España, consideran que el público aquí es algo diferente al resto de Europa, que es un público más ardiente y que vive más intensamente la música en directo. ¿Sois de la misma opinión?
GRAVEYARD (Truls Mörck): Sí, siento que el público español puede ser muy honesto. ¡Si se lo están pasando bien, se nota! A veces, por ejemplo en Suecia, puedes tener la impresión de que el público se aburre con solo mirarlos. Luego, después del concierto, hablas con alguien y está muy feliz y te dice lo bueno que fue el show. En España siempre hemos tenido un gran público que realmente sabe pasarlo bien.
‘Por supuesto, siempre puedes contar con nosotros dando todo lo que tenemos en el escenario cada noche. Nunca nos permitimos ninguna holgura. Siempre 100 %. ‘
DenpaFuzz: ¿Qué puede esperar el público que vaya a vuestro concierto en Madrid junto a bandas como Mars Red Sky, The Obssesed y Rosy Finch?, y… ¿Qué esperáis del público español?
GRAVEYARD (Truls Mörck): Solemos tocar canciones de todos nuestros álbumes. Así que asegúrese de escucharlos todos antes del programa si aún no lo ha hecho. Tratamos de tocar sets con flujos y reflujos, con canciones de mal humor más lentas en la mezcla para hacer que todo sea más dinámico. Por supuesto, siempre puedes contar con nosotros dando todo lo que tenemos en el escenario cada noche. Nunca nos permitimos ninguna holgura. Siempre 100 %. Del público español espero ver muchos sentimientos. Nos encanta tocar en España porque no parece que tengáis ningún problema en mostraros los verdaderos colores. No tantas caras en blanco. ¡Mucho fuego!
DenpaFuzz: Después de la gira junto a KADAVAR y la visita a España y Portugal, ¿Qué planes tiene la banda? ¿Tenéis prevista gira durante este verano?
GRAVEYARD (Truls Mörck): Vamos a tener un verano bastante tranquilo. Realmente no hay giras. Dado que el nuevo álbum (con suerte) se lanzará este otoño, tocaremos más después de eso. Supongo que tocaremos en muchos festivales en el verano de 2024 cuando tengamos un nuevo álbum.

GRAVEYARD began their EUROPEAN TOUR last week with KADAVAR. A tour that will bring them to Spain, where they will perform as part of the Kristonfest Festival. We take the opportunity to speak with their bass player Truls Mörck, who tells us how the band is facing the tour, revealing details of their new album as well as his impressions on this new visit to Spain.
DenpaFuzz: After a time without live performances, in a few days your tour of Europe begins with Kadavar in which you will visit half of Europe. How do you face a tour like this? Do you want to get back on the road?
GRAVEYARD (Truls): Exited to be back on the road! We are sitting on the bus right now on our way to Hamburg for the first show of the tour. A couple of shows are already sold out and that always good news. The last few months have been pretty interesting. After spending so much time in the studio last year, working on new material we had to switch gears and revisit our older songs that we always play live. We are not really used to take long breaks from playing live so it was a bit of work to get the whole thing together again. But dont worry, some time off of touring has done us good. We sound better than ever!
DenpaFuzz: Both KADAVAR and you are two of the most important bands on the European scene. How do you experience a tour like this, with a band with whom you have shared the stage many time?
GRAVEYARD (Truls): We’ve met Kadavar a few times throughout the years but we’ve never really toured together before. It has always been nice to hang so were excited to get to know them more. This is our second time doing a co-headline tour. Last time was with Uncle Acid in the states 2019. These kinds tours are pretty nice to do actually. I takes a little pressure off and you can get into venues you normally wouldn’t be able to fill as a single head-liner.
DenpaFuzz: How do you feel more comfortable, in a big festival with more bands and a large audience, or in a small club playing by yourself?
GRAVEYARD (Truls): Well, festivals is a very interesting and unique circumstance to be in. Like you never know what you going to get. Sometimes you end up playing for huge crowds with is obviously very fun. A lot of the times there is very little room for preparing and doing soundcheck so it can be a bit chaotic going on stage in front of the biggest crowd you’ve seen without even knowing if you’re going to hear the kick drum in your monitor. Some of our best times playing at a festival has been in Spain. We’ve had great times at Azkena and Resurrection Fest. The couple of show we did opening for Clutch in Madrid 2019 were also great.
DenpaFuzz: During this time without concerts, how have you spent your free time?
GRAVEYARD (Truls): We have been working in the studio a lot. Also having time to decompress after years and years of steady touring has been a big thing. It was like a storm suddenly blew past and left a big silent void. Pretty hard to handle at first and, at least for me led to a lot of soul searching and reevaluation of everything. Getting to spend more time with family and friends has been really nice of course. And also finding new work has been interesting. I started working at a theatre recently, just helping out where I can with the sound and on stage. Pretty fun and inspiring stuff. Although I cant wait to start working with the band full time again.
DenpaFuzz: In 2018 you published your last album ‘Peace’. If I don’t misunderstand, your new album was scheduled to be released in May, but this has been delayed until autumn. Can you tell us about the content of this one? What is the path that your music will follow on this new album? What can your fans expect from the new album? What her name?
GRAVEYARD (Truls): For our sixth album we’ve been taking the opportunity to stretch out a little. After all the touring we did after releasing ‘Peace’ we all felt like opening up the image more and let some air in so to speak. This is probably our most dynamic album so far. And the most cinematic in a way. It still has all the stuff you can expect from a Graveyard album but this time we also wanted to go deeper and more motional. Its a pretty contemplative album.
DenpaFuzz: How is a new Graveyard album born? What is the songwriting process until you enter the recording studio?
GRAVEYARD (Truls): Usually after a lot of touring we take some time off to contemplate and relax. During these times new material starts to grow. You look back at the touring you just did and use those experiences as a starting point. What kind of song does the set need? What kind of song are you over and how can you infuse new life to whole thing?
DenpaFuzz: When it comes to composing your songs, which band has influenced you the most? What are your favorite bands?
GRAVEYARD (Truls): Well in the early days of the band we listened a lot to bands like Dust, Stray, Bang and Sabbath of course. Those bands really inspired what we did back then. After the first album I dont think that the influences are so clear. A lot of the time you just wanna develop what you did last. So you have your old record and you tty to fix whatever it is that you dont like with it. So in a way you become inspired by yourself in some weird backwards way. Like what do I dont like our last album and how can we do it different? Then you just end up with something different and hopefully better.
DenpaFuzz: Throughout your musical career, you have visited Spain many times. In a month you will return to participate in the Kristonfest Festival, in which you will play for the first time. What opinion do you have of the Spanish public? According to what many European bands tell me when they visit Spain, they consider that the audience here is somewhat different from the rest of Europe, that it is a more ardent audience and that they experience live music more intensely. Are you of the same opinion?
GRAVEYARD (Truls): Yes, I feel like the spanish crowd can be very honest. If they’re having a good time you can really tell! Sometimes in, for instance Sweden you can get the impression that the audience i very bored just from looking at them. Then after the show you talk to someone and they’re really happy and tell you how good the show was. In Spain we’ve had great audiences that really know how to have a good time.
DenpaFuzz: What can the public expect when they go to your concert in Madrid with bands like Mars Red Sky, The Obssesed and Rosy Finch? And… What do you expect from the Spanish public?
GRAVEYARD (Truls): We usually play songs from all our albums. So make sure to listen to them all before the show if you haven’t already. We try to play sets that kind of ebbs and flows, with slower moody songs thrown in the mix to make the whole thing more dynamic. Of course you can alway count on us giving all we have on stage every night. We never allow ourselves any slack. Always 100 %. From a spanish crowd I expect to see a lot of feelings. We love playing in Spain because you guys doesn’t seem to have any problem showing you true colours. Not so many blank faces. Lots of fire!
DenpaFuzz: After the tour with KADAVAR and the visit to Spain and Portugal, what are the band’s plans? Do you have a tour planned this summer?
GRAVEYARD (Truls): We gonna have a pretty mellow summer. No touring really. Since the new album (hopefully) will be released this fall we will play more after that. I guess were gonna play a lot of festivals in the summer of 2024 instead when we have a new album out.
