Hace unas semanas los berlineses SAMSARA BLUES EXPERIMENT anunciaban un hiato en la actividad de la banda, así como la publicación el próximo mes de enero de su nuevo y probablemente último álbum ‘END OF FOREVER’. Un título que es toda una declaración de intenciones en cuanto al futuro de la banda. Un trabajo que quedará como referente de la psicodelia pesada que durante más de 10 años nos ha ofrecido SAMSARA BLUES EXPERIMENT. Chris Peters, su cantante guitarra y principal artífice, nos cuenta todos los detalles de la despedida así como de su nuevo y último álbum. (english below)

DenpaFuzz: Después de trece años de vida, parece que el proyecto SAMSARA BLUES EXPERIMENT, se apaga, al menos por el momento. Supongo que decisión no ha sido fácil. ¿Qué sensaciones os produce este cese de actividad indefinido? ¿Cómo os sentisteis al anunciarlo?
Chris Peters (SBE): Para ser perfectamente honesto contigo, me siento bastante aliviado. Supongo que esta no es la respuesta que complacerá a los fans (?) Pero si hay algo que considero una de mis fortalezas es la honestidad. Estoy muy agradecido por todo lo que este proyecto me ha dado, pero los últimos meses han sido agotadores y aunque hay muchas razones por las que esta banda tuvo que parar por ahora, el mayor problema para mí es que simplemente no me siento lo suficientemente bien con esto. Parecía todo tan rígido y tenso, no solo el sentimiento dentro de la banda, sino también mi percepción de esta «escena» y todo … No sé hombre. Es 2020, detengámonos para glorificar los «buenos viejos tiempos», por ejemplo, y sigamos adelante con nuestras vidas.
No puedo volver allí y fingir que estaría feliz con eso. Ya no soy ese tipo de chico, he cambiado.
DenpaFuzz: Supongo que esta pregunta puede ser algo prematura, ya que ninguno sabemos lo que nos deparará el futuro, pero vuestros fans seguro que quieren saber si pueden tener esperanzas. ¿Volveremos a ver a SAMARA sobre un escenario o publicando nuevo material en un futuro?
Chris Peters (SBE): Mi idea es concentrarme en mis trabajos en solitario como Surya Kris Peters, tal vez con más voz, más guitarra e incluso algunos otros «elementos rockeros» tradicionales, pero ya veremos. Samsara como era … No puedo volver allí y fingir que estaría feliz con eso. Ya no soy ese tipo de chico. He cambiado.
DenpaFuzz: Escuchando vuestro nuevo álbum, me da la sensación de que os habéis querido despedir a lo grande, como si quisierais hacer un regalo a vuestros seguidores. En el nuevo álbum encontramos fielmente reflejado el sonido que nos ha enamorado durante estos últimos años. ¿Esto es algo premeditado o fruto de la casualidad y la creatividad? ¿Son canciones nuevas o se trata del desarrollo de ideas ya perfiladas?
Chris Peters (SBE): La cosa es que la mayoría de estas canciones tienen tres años y también me parecen viejas en este momento. Debido a ciertos eventos en estos últimos tres años, nos tomó un poco de tiempo registrarlos. Una vez más, no creo que realmente pueda dirigirme a nadie, … si hiciera eso, tendríamos que repetir «el álbum verde» una y otra vez. Entonces, básicamente, todo lo que hacemos es grabar las cosas que nos salen de la cabeza, ¿verdad? Si a alguien le gusta, bueno está bien … si no, ¿qué puedo decir? Afortunadamente, parece que mucha gente se acostumbró al «sonido Samsara» y también mejoramos como banda, por lo que las posibilidades de que a alguien le guste son mayores que al revés.
En serio, también podríamos haberlo llamado «Blood, Sweet & Tears» LOL
DenpaFuzz: Al respecto de la pregunta anterior, ¿En qué os habéis inspirado para escribir este álbum? ¿Cómo nacen las canciones y quién es el artífice de estas composiciones? ¿Son un trabajo en común de los tres o por el contrario pertenecen a alguno de vosotros?
Chris Peters (SBE): La mayor parte de SBE se basó en ideas básicas que vine a presentarles a los otros chicos, uno o dos riffs en cada álbum pueden ser de alguien más en la banda, pero la mayor parte siempre proviene de mis ideas donde doy el marco dentro cada miembro puede aportar su parte. Las canciones en sí mismas pueden representar los tiempos en que se escribieron, pero luego, como te comentaba, las canciones de ese álbum en particular tienen en su mayoría tres años … Los últimos años perdí bastante el interés por el rock tradicional.. No puedo nombrar muchas fuentes de inspiración.
DenpaFuzz: Hablemos un poco de los temas del álbum. ‘Second birth’ es un tema directo, sin concesiones, Da la sensación de que queréis dejar noqueado al oyente a la primera. Heavy-psych en estado puro. Honestamente creo que es tema que podría definir vuestro sonido más auténtico a la perfección. Pesadez, psicodelia y elementos orientales, lo tiene todo, ¿no?
Chris Peters (SBE): Si te soy sincero, no pensamos en esas cosas.
DenpaFuzz: ‘Massive pasive’ parece tener influencias del sonido psico-progresivo de los 70’s. Incluso percibo momentos campestres que me evocan a Jethro Tull. Sin renunciar a la pesadez, el tema fluye con mucha naturalidad. ¿Qué lado de la balanza tiene más peso en el tema, los riffs contundentes y espesos o los momentos acústicos en los que se transmite más dulzura?
Chris Peter (SBE): Siempre pensé que tiene una especie de vibraciones de Nirvana. Una vez más, no tengo ni idea de qué decir … Estoy feliz de haber hecho esa grabación después de todo.
DenpaFuzz: ’Southern sunset’ parece seguir una línea similar, pero aportando más optimismo. Una canción que usa más sonido hard-rock sin perder esa aura progresiva y un grandísimo trabajo de guitarra. También percibo en la introducción momentos más propios de Santana con esos ritmos coloristas y el sonido vintage de los teclados.
Chris Peters (SBE): Si señor!!, hace calor … Hasta te he soltado dos palabras en portugués.
DenpaFuzz: Vuestro lado más tierno y delicado aparece en un tema como ‘Lovage leaves’ Sinfonismo, y una atmósfera bucólica, algo de misticismo….… ¿En que está inspirado? ¿Qué queréis transmitir?
Chris Peters (SBE): ¡Quiero que te enamores de mí! ¿Aún no te has derretido? Ah … ya sabes, vengo de un fondo de guitarra clásica. Me refiero a cuerdas de nailon, dedos y esas cosas … así que de vez en cuando vuelvo a estas raíces, supongo. También escuché un poco de influencia de Camel en el teclado, ¿puede ser?
Era mi bebé, realmente mi bebé, cuando comencé esa banda, pero algo se perdió y después he encontrado algo más.
DenpaFuzz: ‘End of forever’ nos presenta a los SAMSARA más mágicos. Hablar de obras maestras puede parecer un poco pretencioso, pero sin duda este tema en mi humilde opinión podría ser un tesoro de la psicodelia pesada. Aquí están todos los elementos que han caracterizado a la banda desde sus inicios. ¿En algún momento habéis premeditado el sonido general del álbum para que contuviera toda vuestra esencia, sin experimentos?
Chris Peters (SBE): Todo salió de forma natural, además de muchas discusiones esta vez .Bueno, si realmente es una «obra maestra» para ti, tal vez valió la pena toda la sangre, sudor y lágrimas. En serio, también podríamos haber llamado al álbum «Blood, Sweat and Tears» LOL
DenpaFuzz: Christian, tras tu traslado a Brasil, ¿seguirás componiendo música desde allí para tus proyectos en solitario? Aunque al principio te he preguntado sobre esto, vuestros seguidores tienen la incertidumbre de si dentro de un tiempo puedan tener más material vuestro, ¿os habéis planteado la posibilidad de componer nuevas canciones desde la distancia, o es algo completamente descartado?
Chris Peters (SBE): Yo, como Surya Kris Peters, grabaré pequeñas melodías sobre Samsara, hombre, no sé. Hay mucho estrés y desorden emocional en este momento. Era mi bebé, realmente mi bebé, cuando comencé esa banda, pero algo se perdió y después he encontrado algo más.
DenpaFuzz: Solo me queda desearos a los tres mucha suerte en vuestra nueva vida y daros las gracias por todo el legado que nos dejáis como una de las bandas más destacadas de la escena psicodélica de los últimos años. Ojalá todo esto sea solo un paréntesis, aunque, evidentemente vuestra felicidad es lo primero. GRACIAS.

A few weeks ago SAMSARA BLUES EXPERIMENT announced a hiatus in the band’s activity, as well as the publication next month of January of their new and probably last album ‘END OF FOREVER’. A title that is a statement of intent regarding the future of the band. A work that will remain as a benchmark for heavy-psych that SAMSARA BLUES EXPERIMENT has offered us for more than 10 years. Chris Peters, his guitar singer and leader, tells us all the details of the farewell as well as his new and last album.

DenpaFuzz: After 13 years of musical career. It seems that the proyect calls it quits, at least for the time being. I guess the decision has not been easy. What kind of sensations and feelings do you get from this indefinite hiatus? How did you feel when you made the announcement?
Chris Peters (SBE): To be perfectly honest with you I feel pretty much relieved. I guess that this is not the answer that will please the fans out there (?) but if there’s one thing I consider one of my strenghts it is honesty. I am very grateful for all this project has given me, but the last months have been nothing but tiring and even though there are plenty of reasons why this band had to stop for now, the biggest problem for myself is that I just don’t feel well enough anymore with this. It seemed all so rigid and tense, not just the feeling within the band but also my perception of this «scene» and everything … I don’t know man. It’s 2020, let’s stop to glorify the «good old days» for instance and move on with our lifes.
I can’t go back there and pretend I’d be happy with it. I’m not that kind of guy anymore, I’ve changed.
DenpaFuzz: I guess this question will be a bit premature as none of us know what will come in the future, but I think your fans might want to know if they can hold on to a little hope. Will we ever see SAMARA hitting the stage or releasing some material in the future?
Chris Peters (SBE): My idea is to concentrate on my solo works as Surya Kris Peters, maybe with more vocals, more guitar and even some other traditional «rock elements» but we shall see. Samsara as it was … I can’t go back there and pretend I’d be happy with it. I’m not that kind of guy anymore. I have changed
DenpaFuzz: Listening to your new album, it gives me the impression that you wanted to say goodbye in a big way, as if you wanted to give your fans a final gift. In the new album we find faithfully represented the sound that has made your fans fall in love with the band in recent years. Is this something premeditated or the result of chance and creativity flow? Are these new songs or is it the further development of older ideas that were already outlined?
Chris Peters (SBE): The things is, most of these songs are three years old and they also feel old to me right now. Due to certain events within these last three years it took a bit long to record them. Again, I don’t think I really could address anyone out there, … if I’d do that we’d have to repeat «the green album» over and over again. So all we do basically is recording the things that pop out of our heads, right? If someone likes it, well okay … if not, what can I say? Fortunately it seems that quite a lot of people got used to the «Samsara sound» and we also improved as a band, so chances someone may like it are higher than the other way 😉
He was my baby, really my baby, when I started that band, but something was lost and then I have found something else.
DenpaFuzz: Regarding the previous question, what have you been inspired by to write this album? How are the songs born and who is the creator of these compositions? Are they the result of a team work of the three or do they belong to one of you?
Chris Peters (SBE): Most of SBE was based on basic ideas that I came to present to the other guys, one or two riffs on each album may be from someone else in the band but most of it has always come from after my ideas where I give the framework within each member can contribute his part. The songs in itself may represent the times in which the’d been written, but then like I told you the songs on that album in particular are mostly three years old … The last years I kinda lost interest in a lot of traditional rock music. I can’t name you many inspirations …
DenpaFuzz: Let’s talk a bit about the songs on the album. ‘Second birth’ is a direct song, without compromises. It gives me the feeling that you want to knock out the listener on first listen. Heavy-psych in its purest form. I honestly think that it is a theme that could define your most authentic sound perfectly. Heaviness, psychedelia and oriental elements, it has it all, right? Was it meant to be a destillation of your style?
Chris Peters (SBE): We don’t think about such things honestly.
DenpaFuzz: ‘Massive pasive’ It seems to be influenced by the psychedelic-progressive sounds from the 70’s. I even perceive country-ish/folkish moments that remind me of Jethro Tull. Without renouncing the heaviness, the theme flows very naturally. What you think has more weight in the song? The forceful and thick riffs or the acoustic moments in which more sweetness is transmitted?
Chris Peters (SBE): I always thought it has a kind of Nirvana-vibe? Yet again, I’m a bit clueless on what to say … I’m just happy we made that recording after all.
DenpaFuzz: ’Southern sunset’ seems to follow a similar style, but bringing a happier more optimistic sound. A song that uses more hard-rock sounds without losing that progressive aura and great guitar work. I also perceive in the introduction, some moments which sound more typical of Santana with those colorful rhythms and the sound of vintage keyboards.
Chris Peters (SBE): Si señor, hace calor … I even threw in two words of portugues there.
DenpaFuzz: Your softer and delicate side shows up in a song like ‘Lovage leaves’ Symphonic and an almost bucolic atmosphere, some mysticism….… What was it inspired by? What did you want to convey onto the listener?
Chris Peters (SBE): I want to make you fall in love with me! Haven’t you melted yet ? Ah … you know, I come from a classical guitar background. I mean nylon strings and fingerpicking and stuff … so from time to time I go back to these roots I guess. I also hear a bit of Camel-influence on the keyboard perhaps?
DenpaFuzz: ‘End of forever’ presents us with a more “esoteric” SAMSARA. Talking about masterpieces may seem a bit pretentious, but without a doubt this tune, in my humble opinion, is a treasure cove of heavy psychedelia. Here we find all the characteristic elements of the band since its inception. Have you ever premeditated the general sound of the album so that it contained all your essence, without experiments? Or again, it jus came put that way naturally?
Chris Peters (SBE): It all came out naturally, plus a lot of discussions this time … well if it really is a «masterpiece» for you maybe it was worth all the blood, sweat and tears. Seriously, we also could have called the album «Blood, Sweat and Tears» LOL
DenpaFuzz: Christian, after your move to Brazil,. Will you continue to write music for your solo projects? Although at the beginning I asked you about this, your followers are uncertain if in a while they will have more of your material, have you considered the possibility of writing new songs remotely. With today’s technology and the current status of things, many bands and musicians worldwide are exploring the posibility of remote collaborations and writing partnerships. Or is it completely ruled out?
Chris Peters (SBE): Me as Surya Kris Peters will go on to record these little tunes About Samsara aw man, I don’t know there’s a lot of stress and emotional clutter attached to this right now. It was my baby, really my baby, when I started that band, but something got lost and then something else has been found.
DenpaFuzz: I can only wish the three of you the best of luck in your new life and new endeavors and thank you for the legacy that you leave us as one of the most outstanding bands on the psychedelic scene in recent years.
